Home sweet home
“Am I satisfied with my last winter vacation?” I questioned myself. In retrospect, I would rate my vacation as an intangible gift.
The Alumni Gathering
In order to keep the alumni in touched, my former High School, Bliss and Wisdom High School would organize camp at every end of the semester for the alumni.
A series of lessons were organized for the alumni, to recharge our souls. We watched videos specially for the reminiscence of our High School life. Our teachers came over to see us and we all had a reunion lunch.
A skit was prepared too, and I was the Starring of the skit.
Volunteering at Teachers’ Camp
I was a volunteer at Teachers’ Camp for six days. There were over a thousand of volunteers. Throughout the camp, I had to wake up at 5am everyday and had to sleep at 11am. I was the receptionist on the day when the teachers reported to the camp. The youth volunteers were in charged of serving the teachers during meal time. We set up the dinning tables and placed the dishes on the tables. We sang songs to welcome teacher to the canteen as they entered. We cleared the dishes and cleaned thousands of bowls, plates and utensils after meal. Even though the water was freezing cold, everyone was washing the dishes gleefully.
Besides, I went to shared my life story with the teachers and I bowed to the teachers to thank them on the behalf of all college students.
At the end of the camp, I was fatigued, but I learned a lot.
Home Sweet Home
I rushed to the airport straight I was dismissed from the Camp. At the very next day when I arrived Singapore, my dad asked me to help him up at the clinic.
I helped up at the counter, registering, dispensing medicine and collecting the medical and consultation fee. It was very challenging for me at the start. Firstly, I was too weary. Secondly, I had no idea how to communicate with foreign or elderly patients. (I wondered if they could understand proper Chinese. But they are probably not used to my accent. Neither do I know how to speak dialects. I wondered if the Indonesian maid could understand proper English. Sadly, I didn’t have the courage to speak in Indonesian.) Thirdly, I was not accustomed to the way Singaporean express themselves, as I have been staying in Taiwan for quite sometimes. I even need to adjust myself to read Simplified Chinese.
At first, I went working apprehensively. One of the patients picked on me. I was reluctant to admit my mistake. A friend of my taught me that I could learn how to send blessings to them as I was preparing the medication for them. It brought me to a new light.
Steamboat Gathering
I was being invited informally to a youth group’s steamboat gathering. I met old acquaintance and new acquaintance as well. I realized that I became so bashful when I was backed in Singapore. I was happy to see my old friends, yet I lost my words when I saw them. It was a wonderful gathering anyway.
Chinese New Year
Chinese in Singapore place strong value to Chinese New Year. We spent time for spring cleaning as a good beginning of the year. I had reunion gatherings with my paternal and maternal grandparents on Chinese New Year’s Eve. On Chinese New Year, we made New Year’s resolution, went around visiting our relatives, teachers and friends.

“Make new friends but keep the old. Those are silver, these are gold.”
Here, I would like to show my gratitude to those who contributed to my enriching vacation.
